Robert Sturdy urges young people to support the environment

click a treeEuro MP Robert Sturdy is urging young people to take part in a European environmental campaign which encourages them to plant tree seedlings.

Under the “Click a Tree” campaign, free seedlings will be sent to the first 5,000 people aged 14-29 who apply at the website: http://clickatree.europa.eu

It is an initiative from the European Commission in the run up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December where an international deal on the environment is expected to be announced.

Mr Sturdy, who has sat on the Environment Committee, said he hoped the campaign would be supported by young people in East Anglia.

“It’s important that we all play our part in protecting the environment. I know that young people are very concerned about these issues.  Around nine billion tonnes of CO2 are absorbed by trees every year, but nearly two billion tonnes are released through deforestation.

“I very much hope our young people will support the “Click A Tree” initiative. Our young people today are going to be the decision makers of tomorrow and will have to tackle the continuing problems caused by climate change.  By planting more trees, we can demonstrate our commitment to Earth’s climate and can make our own surroundings a little bit greener!”

Those who are too late for a free seedling can still take part by purchasing their own seeds and registering the tree on the website. Their tree will then be entered into a competition judged by a public vote.
