Robert Sturdy Supports Nuclear Power for Low Carbon Future
15 April 2009
The government today unveiled a list of potential sites for new nuclear power stations to help maintain Britain’s ability to generate its own energy after existing nuclear and coal-fired power stations are shut down.
The potential sites have been nominated by companies interested in building the stations and have been initially approved by the government. Two of the eleven sites are located in the Eastern Region – at Sizewell in Suffolk and Bradwell in Essex
Members of the public are now being asked for their views during a month-long consultation period. The government hopes to have the first reactors operational by 2018.
Robert Sturdy MEP said:
“I believe that nuclear power will play a central role in Britain’s transition to a low carbon economy and it is paramount that we act now to secure our long term energy security.
“These developments also have the potential to create thousands of both long and short term jobs in the region, not only at the plants themselves but in the surrounding area, as well as offering multimillion pound opportunities for British businesses.
“I strongly urge the authorities to take in to account the view of local residents during the consultation process. It is vital that strong provisions are put in place to guarantee the long term safety of the people of the Eastern Region.”
